Abdelkareem Nabil Soliman is a 22-year-old Egyptian blogger who has been arrested by authorities in Alexandria, Egypt.
Abdelkareem first came to international attention early 2006 when he was kicked out of Al Azhar University for posts on his blog. He was detained at that time by police but was released. Despite this e has continued to write on women's rights, religious freedom, and academic freedom.
On Nov 6, Abdel kareem was again interrogated over his blog posting. A human rights lawyer from the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information represented Abdelkareem. But the police still decided to arrest him.
It has now emerged that Kareem has been sentenced to FOUR years in prison: three years for contempting religion, and one year for defaming the president.
His appeal is to be launched on Saturday by his lawyers but his supporters are anxious that this will still not result in his release but with luck might shorten the sentence. There is a petition on his suppporters web site and you may wish to consider adding your support.
