At the 50th annual Grammy Awards Amy Winehouse won two of the big categories; song of the year for "Rehab" and best new artist. Amy Winehouse won a total of four awards for the night. Winehouse also won two awards in the pre-broadcast presentation, in the categories of best pop vocal album (for "Back to Black") and best female pop vocal. Most of the 100-plus Grammy awards are given out before the actual show.
The Foo Fighters were Grammy winners for best rock album with "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace".
Kanye West had eight nominations and won in the best rap album Grammy category for his album "Graduation." Kayne west also won three Grammys in the Grammy pre-broadcast, one of which was for best rap solo performance with "Stronger."
Alicia Keys won the first award of the night, the best female R&B performance and opened the show with the song "Learnin' the Blues" in a "duet" with a virtual Frank Sinatra, who was on video in an old performance.
Other winners at the Grammys' Awards pre-broadcast ceremony included Bruce Springsteen, with three Grammys, including best rock song for "Radio Nowhere"; the White Stripes, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Underwood, the Foo Fighters and Hancock.
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama continued his winning form by beating two presidents (Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter)to win the Grammy for best spoken-word album; "The Audacity Of Hope: Thoughts On Reclaiming The American Dream." Hilary Clinton will be hoping that this defeat of her husband is not a fortaste of defeat in the democratic race.
