"A Man's a Man for all that!" - Rabbie Burns

"Religion? No thanks. I prefer not to outsource my brainwashing."
Trying to get your average Joe creationist to understand the phrase scientific theory is as hard as getting a fish to enjoy mountaineering. Its an unimagined world for them - it requires a complete reversal of their normal modes of thinking and being. The fact that humans could explain the complexities of this world without a creating God is a world view they cannot grasp. It's like asking a tuna if it appreciates the view from the top of Mount Everest.

Star Trek and The Film Review reviewed

It's probably obvious to regular readers that I am a bit of a Star Trek fan given my recent "Science Officer" postings using the excellent widget that Delirious found. I have been reading up on some of the film reviews of the new Star trek film before I go to see it and there is a short review at a fairly new film review website - The Film Review which discusses the approach taken by actor Chris Pine to his role as the young captain Kirk.

The review - William Shatner has no place in new Star Trek - is a rather brief piece that explains that Chris Pine apparently went out of his way not to watch William Shatner as Captain Kirk because he was worried that he would simply end up doing a bad impersonation of him in the film. In fact the director also appears to have gone out of his way not to get caught out in an attempt to create a prequel of gold plated accuracy.

This is always the problem of course with prequels - how much should the prequel pay accurate homage to the details of the other films in a series or can it afford to be a "re-imagining".

The latest Star Trek movie is by all accounts very much a re-imagining. I am going to go to it ( soon !!! ) with an open mind. I am not such a Trekkie that I will be looking for a detailed reconstruction of the old Star Trek. In fact if the Star Trek franchise is to gain a new generation of audiences and the Star Trek films are going to keep coming ( please !) then it is only sensible that any new film must be able to re-imagine in this way.

On a broader note I can't really make up my mind about Film Review websites like The Film Review. I always listen to the reviews before I go to see a film but reviews don't really influence me in my judgment of a film and there have been films which have had poor reviews that I personally enjoyed. I tend to prefer film reviews with a little more meat to them than those in The Film Review website but these kinds of sites are great for snippets of information that you don't get elsewhere and its also nice to get a wee film clip alongside a review like the film review site has.

Interestingly the site is running a film review competition offering free DVD rental for a year for the best user submitted film review.

Overall I would give the Film review website maybe a 6 out of 10 I think and I have no doubt that I will be giving the new Star Trek movie a 10 out of 10 regardless - biased ? Moi?

I would be interested to hear what other peoples favourite films are and views on how this film review website stacks up compared to any others that you use.

This may come as a surprise to you, but I have not been to a film in years. If someone insists that I see one, I try and get a DVD and if that is not available, I simply forget about it.

The last film that I saw was "The scent of a woman." I am that ancient!

Rum - that film is ancient! I tend to watch films mostly on DVD but you just cant beat going to the Cinema to watch a big blockbuster - you cant get the same all enveloping experience from a DVD.

What I really want to dois go and see some of the 3D movies that are coming out.

I haven't seen it yet either, but would like to. I'm pretty attached to the original Star Trek, and think it is far better than any of the "Next generation" or other versions.

It's interesting though, I was never crazy about most of the actors in Star Wars. That may sound like blasphemy, but I think they could have found much better actors for most of the roles. Alec Guiness is one of the few that I think did a great job. I wasn't thrilled with Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. I like James Earl Jones' voice, but I don't like the actor they chose to portray him. Star Trek on the other hand, I loved the entire cast, and thought each one was perfect in their role!

Now this is more like the news that interests me. http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/Movies/05/20/ben.kingsley.bollywood.cannes/index.html

I don't go to movie theaters much, either. In fact, I've gone only 3 times in my life. First was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, second was Hidalgo, and the last was the Dark Knight.

I'm a Trekkie too, but I'm waiting for the blueray DVD. Honestly, I'm not too excited over this new movie. Maybe that Enterprise series soured me, but I think they should be moving forward in the time line instead of backwards.
